Popups and alert boxes are the most abused tricks. Blinking text, dumb mouse trails, background music and hard to read text (like the above header) are some others.

Tricks can be great ways to embellish your website with fun and interesting things that can develope into interactivity between your visitors and your website. This in turn helps your page ranking in the search engines. Used abusively and your visitor makes a quick escape and a mental note never to visit your website again.

Be careful with getting too cute and fancy with this kind of add on stuff because people might not appreciate whatever great idea inspired you at the time. There's better ways to get attention and you needn't risk driving away your visitors with dumb stuff like the examples here.
